The accomplishment of the constantly growing information amount represents a challenge for the information society of the 21st century. The information flood makes it increasingly difficult to obtain important information at any time and place and in every form. Mobility – the state of the general portability – counts in this context among the most frequently mentioned and discussed up-to-date terms. Although it is difficult to define mobility, it is viewed as a human necessity in the today’s society. The difficulty of the assessment of the term lies in its further development, from the classical “spatial-geographical” mobility, over the “social” mobility up to the “technical-physical” mobility, for example in the form of telecommunications. The future of the mobile information society lies in the interaction of the mobile end devices, their nets and the associated applications and services. Thereby not the technically possible but the economical and useful one plays the major role. This is the only way to regain the substantial investments made, e.g. license fees.
Goal
The multimedia development of message content plays an important role in mobile news services. Recently, text emails and SMS are the most frequent forms of messages but in the future more and more multimedia content (for ex. photos, video clips, …) will be sent.
The increasing need of information-centered applications, which must be regarded by the respective networks and end devices as mobile applications, is also to be observed in the context of this discussion.
The goal of the project is to develop an interface that enables the use of applications and services of different end devices in different nets. This means to search for solutions to store contents in a neutral way so that they, depending on the end device (PC, laptop, Palm, mobile phone, …), transmitting medium (GSM, UMTS, WLAN, …) and application / service (Location Based Service, Entertainment, …) can be converted and transmitted by a mobile news service (MIND) into the respectively best format.
